The examinations set by the Driving Standards Agency for those seeking to have their name entered on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors are in three parts.
Part I Test of Theoretical Knowledge.
Part II Test of Driving Ability.
Part III Test of Instructional Ability.
Each test must be passed before the next test can be applied for. There is a
maximum number of three attempts at any one of the practical tests and all tests
must be passed within a two year period, which commences from the date of passing
part I. If the trainee is not successful within three attempts of any of the
practical tests, then they must wait for the expiry of the two-year period before
starting to re-take the qualifying examinations, commencing with part I. A trainee
licence valid for six months can be applied for, under sponsorship, once parts
I and II have been successfully completed and they have received 40 hours part
III training. However, this is not essential and can sometimes extend the length
of time it takes to qualify.
